About Us

Discovery Woods Preschool is a nonprofit nature based, Reggio inspired program.  This school building has three early child hood classes with a child sized restroom in each class.  The fourth room is an atelier stocked with different art materials.  This room is also used as an afterschool enrichment program which includes tutoring for children K-5th grade.  The program has a large kitchen space where breakfast, lunch, and snacks are served.  We participate in the Child and Adult Food Program because serving nutritious and correct portions are crucial to your child's growth and development.

The outdoor space is a fenced in area with play equipment, a dramatic play house where children can explore a nature kitchen and a sand boat to stimulate creativity. We are close to the Franciscan nature center and walking trails for additional nature exploration. The program opens at 5:30 am until 6:30 pm Monday through Friday.

Philosophy

This program believes each child is infinitely capable, creative, and intelligent. The job of the educators is to support these qualities based on child initiated projects and developmentally appropriate activities. The outdoor and indoor environments are carefully designed and considered the Third Teacher.  This program believes in introducing our youngest learners to nature.  Children who play outside and explore nature in programs have been shown to be physically and mentally healthier and this connect with nature also benefits special needs children.  Children who engage in nature activities regularly become problem solvers, have higher self-esteem, and are more creative.

Mission

Our mission is to provide high quality care to each child in the program so working families can provide for their children and be assured that their child's developmental needs are being met. A child's sense of wonder and joy along with their imaginations are encouraged, their ideas cultivated and respected. It is important for children to problem solve and make positive connections with the natural world.

Our mission is to prepare children with academic skills along with the social emotional skills they need to be prepared for Kindergarten. Academic skills develop differently for each child and continuing growth at their developmental level is important. Literacy skills such as letter recognition, phonemic awareness and simple sight words provide a foundation of early success with reading and are a priority of the program.

Our mission is to provide children with the skills needed later in life. The ability to play and communicate with others, create ideas and projects, show perseverance, self-control, and a joy for learning!

Our mission is to engage parents on a daily basis in the Discovery Woods setting. They are encouraged to be active partners in creating and problem solving with the current class projects. Parent involvement and fundraising development is essential for the program to connect with the community it serves.
